Blog Brownstoner recalls a chilling episode of a near mugging, attack by a group of teens in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. I’m often amazed by the amount of new construction of luxury condos and the influx of new residents to neighborhoods we call the hood.
I mused to a couple of my peeps about all the robberies waiting to happen when you have new to the hood hipsters and high income folk sharing the block with the underprivileged. I lived in Brownsville and East Flatbush and frequented Crown Heights and the transformation in the last ten years is unbelievable.
The downside to all this is that if I’m getting squeezed by increasing rent and cost of living and I do ok salary wise, how about the working poor and their children. Every piece of empty space thats available is under development for more luxury housing, but then community centers are shutdown, parks aren’t being opened to deal with the population growth. I look at the Toren and I know I couldn’t afford to buy the cheapest condo, what goes through the head of a teen living in public housing 2-3 blocks away. I just hope we aren’t on our way to the types of unequal distribution of wealth we see in places like Brazil or Mexico.
These are just my thoughts, feel hipsters and thugs to give me yours.
